SWING BRIDGE

Maintenance and temporary closure of suspension bridge

The Parish Council (PC) have been informed by NYCC that maintenance is planned on the footbridge between Low Hutton and Menethorpe, involving full repainting and repairs including replacement of the timber fencing.

The works are programmed to start on 27th February and complete by 7th of April.

Some works will require closure of the bridge for both the contractor’s and walkers’ safety. The bridge will have to be closed completely day and night for one week (two in case of bad weather) for painting of the handrails because even walking over the bridge will disturb the paint before it has cured.  NYCC are meeting the contractor week commencing 13th February to discuss when closure will occur; currently expected in mid-March.

NYCC’s  intention is to keep the bridge open whenever possible. They appreciate that closure will be inconvenient for those who use the bridge for commuting to school or work. NYCC’s school passenger transport team do not have any evidence of students who use the bridge for their commutes to school, although only students who possess bus passes appear in their records.

The PC is trying to ensure that all residents are aware of the timing and duration of the work and of the closure so that alternative arrangements can be made. The PC wishes to ascertain details of people’s needs regarding crossing the river and in particular those for whom crossing is essential so that it may liaise with NYCC accordingly.

If anyone has information on the number of people this might affect and the approximate times the bridge is used for commuting please inform PC Chairman, Richard Green.
